Sorting Trash in Korea
Korea separates household rubbish strictly, and putting it in the wrong place can mean a fine for your host. If you stay in an apartment or guesthouse, it helps to know the basics.
The three main groups
| Type | Korean | Where it goes |
|---|---|---|
| General waste | 일반쓰레기 | Official pay-as-you-throw bag (종량제 봉투), sold at convenience stores and supermarkets. Bags are specific to each district. |
| Food waste | 음식물쓰레기 | Separate food-waste bin or bag. Drain liquid first. |
| Recyclables | 재활용 | Sorted by type in the building's recycling area. |
Recycling by type
- Plastic (플라스틱) — bottles and containers, rinsed. Remove labels if you can.
- Cans (캔) and glass (유리) — empty and rinse.
- Paper (종이) — flattened boxes and paper, no food stains.
- Vinyl / plastic film (비닐) — wrappers and plastic bags, clean.
Not food waste
Bones, shells of shellfish and eggs, fruit pits, tea bags and onion skins usually go in general waste, not food waste.
Tips
- Check your accommodation's guide or ask your host — collection days and bin locations differ by building.
- In the street, public bins are rare. Carry a small bag and dispose of rubbish at your accommodation or a convenience store.
