Getting Around Korea: Which Map App?
Why not just Google Maps?
For years Korea did not allow its detailed map data to leave the country, so Google Maps in Korea has shown places but often no walking or driving directions. In February 2026 the government gave Google conditional approval to use that data, but features are still rolling out. For now, local map apps are far more reliable.
Install one (or both) before you fly
| App | Good at | Language |
|---|---|---|
| Naver Map | Transit routes, exact exits, opening hours, reviews | English, Japanese, Chinese menus |
| KakaoMap | Walking, bus and subway routes, simple layout | English menus |
Both are free on the App Store and Google Play. You do not need a Korean phone number just to search and get directions.
How to search well
- Copy-paste the Korean name or address if you have it (from a booking, a hotel email or Instagram). It is far more accurate than an English spelling.
- If you only have an English name, add the area: e.g. "Starbucks Myeongdong".
- Tap Directions and choose Transit or Walk. Routes show the subway exit number — use it, big stations have 10+ exits.
Tips
- Map apps need data. Get an eSIM or SIM on arrival.
- Bus arrival times in both apps are live and accurate.
- Show the Korean address screen to a taxi driver instead of reading it out.
